Everyone knows Fitzwilliam Square, that mysterious gated (and unfortunately locked) park between Lower Pembroke St and Upper Fitzwilliam St on the south side of Dublin City. Well, I don’t know about you, but I’ve always been curious about what the park looked like inside! So, now is my chance as every Friday, Fitzwilliam Square will host a new lunchtime market that is open to all! Here at Mylunch, we love learning about new and interesting ways to enjoy lunch and as the square is only around the corner from us we were delighted to hear about it! Now all we need is good weather and it’s happy days!

The Market is open from 11:30am to 2:30pm, every Friday. There will be over twenty pop up style gourmet restaurants offering a wide selection of healthy and delicious lunchtime treats! A perfect option for lunch in Dublin 2! This is a great alternative to the oul ham and cheese sambo at your desk we think! Sure, the health benefits are enormous too: it will provide you with your daily dose of Vitamin D and that bit of fresh air to blow the cobwebs away and leave you wide awake and full of energy for the weekend ahead!

One of the big bonuses of the market is that they provide you with the picnic blankets to chill out and enjoy your lunch on (and to keep your clothes sparkling clean for your return to the office). These guys really have thought of everything. There will also be a live jazz performance to help you unwind! A little bit of entertainment as you munch your lunch, if you don’t mind!

The market is organised by Irish Village Markets, who also organise similar lunchtime, farmer and food markets at the Grand Canal, Spencer dock, Sandyford and many more locations all over Dublin. Click here for a full list of their markets.

In the fifth of our guest pieces on The Lunchbox, (1, 2, 3, 4, where does the time go!)we talk to the lovely Rachael, one half of brand new Irish recessionista food and shopping blog gastronomics.ie.

Having started their site at the beginning of the year, gastronomics is truly going from rom strength to strength! Updated twice daily, the site bringis tips and hints on how to cook, eat and drink like a true recessionista, and is a fully independent food and shopping blog!
The mother and daughter team's self stated aim , while catering for six people and two respectively, is to use the site to share their efforts to lower the grocery bills, while keeping the tummies satisfied! So let's let Rach take over and tell you a bit about her lunch loves!

Hi there! My name’s Rachael and I’m the (younger, but sssh!) half of Gastronomics.ie. As stated, we are a mother and daughter team, who used to often ring each other with news of a special offer, early bird or great recipe we’d discovered, so now we just post about it instead!

Thanks for the intro Rachael, we won't say anything about who's the younger! So tell us a little about your own lunch habits? Is being a true recessionista and food lover might difficult?

No actually! I’m lucky enough to have a microwave in my workplace, so every Sunday, I cook a huge pot of a brown-rice based dish such as curry, Rogan Josh or Madras, and fill five lunchboxes for the whole week. (Can you tell I’m a spice fiend?!) I find having a warm, nourishing lunch really satisfies my hunger and the brown-rice sustains my energy levels for longer than a white bread sambo would. If I’ve managed to bag a Saturday off I love to enjoy a late alfresco lunch at Las Rada Wine & Tapas Bar, Naas enjoying the sun, a selection of tapas and a cheeky glass of Pinot Grigio.

Some nice tips there, we're all for a homemade lunch now and again! So would you say you're up to a Michelin Star standard on the cookery scale yet?!

I’m no Cordon Bleu chef, and there’s many a time it doesn’t go quite to plan, but I do love to cook. As my day job involves long hours and crazy cross-country trips, I really enjoy relaxing on a Sunday in the kitchen. I find there’s a lot of peace to be had in the methodical preparing, cooking and arranging of food. The latest Sunday dish that went down a treat in our house was Beef & Guinness pie – comfort food at its best.

Ah, you can't beat a bit of comfort food on a Sunday, when you're feeling a bit delicate! What about a Sunday brunch recommendation then, if we're feeling a bit lazy?

Without a doubt the best Sunday brunch offering I’ve come across in a long time is in The Savoy, Limerick – you can have your pick of a huge selection of breakfast options - including the most delicious omelettes - at this five star hotel, relaxing in the plush surroundings with the papers and never-ending coffee, and it’ll cost you the grand total of €9. Insane value – my Mum’s never out of the place!

Wow, that is a great tip! Any of our Munster users, you know where to go on a Sunday morning now! Speaking of insane value, what are your faves on mylunch.ie? I know you're a Kildare resident, and we'll have lots more down there soon!

I love, love, love GBK, although my ever-expanding waistline hates, hates, hates it – the guys in Whitewater Shopping Centre, Newbridge are fantastic, very professional and always super-friendly. Myself and the boyfriend love to curl up on a Friday with a portion each of the ridiculously gorgeous wings with blue cheese sauce and share a burger – they’re HUGE! With the Mylunch.ie voucher we occasionally indulge in the two although he usually gives me a hand finishing mine! ;)
We can normally eat two GBKs on our own! Is that such a bad thing?!

So as a firmly signed up member of the ever growing Irish foodie spectrum, what are your hopes and dreams for the future of the scene?

I would really love to see the long-ago mooted idea of a cafe culture in Ireland come to fruition. My favourite thing in life is having a cup of peppermint tea or a glass of wine with friends, enjoying some tasty nibbles, and taking in some sunshine if it’s going - not throwing back over-priced shots in a heaving club, queuing for gross food at 3am and watching people throw up out of a taxi the whole way home! However, there are very few wine bars in Ireland and the lovely local cafes we do have are being forced out of the market by unfeasibly high rents and rates. I realise we don’t have the weather our European friends enjoy, so pop-up restaurants and cafes during the summer may be a valid solution, if city landlords and councils want to make even temporary use of the many unfortunately empty lots.

Wow, now that's a suggestion. Are you listening Enda? We here at mylunch completely agree with the attempt to improve our cafe culture.

However, Rach, you can let us in on a little secret...If you do find yourself in a heaving sweaty club throwing back shots (as even the best of us sometimes do!), well, what's the cure for the morning after?

Oh God, there is no stopping me with a hangover, I will eat whatever comes into my poor sore head – it’s almost always some sort of pasta-based dish, the creamier and more calorific the better. I usually toss some smoked ham, chipotle chillies, shallots and garlic into the pan, deglaze with white wine, add crème fraîche and brown pasta, top with cheese and pop in the oven. Cheesy carby bliss requiring minimum effort from my utterly
useless hungover self!

That's a lot more effort than our usual of a Brekkie Roll, and a lot tastier sounding too! Maybe we should be taking notes!
So finally, (and a question that Rachael came up with hereself!) we'd like to know,what would you like to do if you could own a restaurant yourself? How would you run it?

Well firstly, I’d probably be engaged in a permanent row with the local rates authority! But secondly, I’d take a leaf out of the New York foodies’ book and offer some healthy dishes on my menu. It’s not overly expensive to allow customers to choose brown pasta, noodles or rice instead of white, preparing low-fat options for dressings and sauces, or even just to offer them a steamed fish dish alongside the usual butter-laden version. This would definitely tempt more female parties through the door, and God knows we lunching ladies like to make up the calories in our wine, a habit which helps boost the coffers for restaurants. The Milano’s chain of restaurants is the first I’ve seen go this direction, with their low-cal pizzas and habit of serving dressings on the side – myself and my fellow yo-yo dieting girlfriends would love to see more like it!

Nice advice for budding restaurateurs out there!

Ever wasted an entire lunch break standing in line to buy a soggy sandwich made with too much butter, not enough fillings, with ingredients you don’t like, and then paying a bomb for it? Well, we're avid lunch eaters too, and we certainly have!
In fact, one of the main reasons the site came into being was we were fed up with the choice and value on offer in our area, and wanted to put some time and effort into researching what really good lunch options were available out there! Hey, we all eat it every day, why not make it better?!

Well, MYO IFSC (that's Make Your Own by the way!) had the same thoughts, and they too decided to do something about it! From an initial Australian concept (obviously those Aussies had the same problems as us!), MYO has grown into revolutionary sandwich and salad bar gives its customers the
power to create their own lunch, exactly the way they like it! Simple eh? Simple but effective! Oh, and by the way, they've crackin coffee too!

The M.Y.O. concept is incredibly simple but ingenious. On entering the store (as I say, one of the perks of the job is we're a lunch eater too!) we grabbed a tray, chose from loads of freshly baked bread and began assembling our sandwich from the 75 fresh gourmet sandwich fillings, including deli-style meats and cheeses, as we worked our way around.
It's soooo easy, soooo simple, and takes away the effort of having to explain that you want no freakin mayo to some scowling deli maiden!

MYO promises no queues, value for money, an easy to use system and most importantly, choice!
For how many of us out there is the good old chicken fillet roll the default option? Grey lettuce, some watered down mayo, a slab of butter big enough
to give an elephant a heart attack, lukewarm chicken and perhaps a little bit
of water dripping tomato. Come on now, raise your hand.

Well, a slap on the wrists for you sir/madam, we've far more than that in Dublin's dining scene, for far better value, and MYO IFSC is the epitome of

Here's our weekly round up of all the interesting headlines that will be talked about at lunchtime this week!

Earth Hour
On Saturday evening at around 8.30 p.m., the world celebrated Earth Hour, an hour of darkness organised by the WWF (no not the men in tights!) take a stand against climate change. As always, the event was a huge success, with towns and cities the world over going dark for at least an hour. See here for some amazing pictures of monuments and landmarks the world over (including the Sydney Opera House, and the Roman Colosseum) going dark. In Dublin, the stroke of 8.30pm saw Áras an Uachtaráin, the Four Courts, Leinster House and Government Buildings go lights out, but the Convention Centre, Dublin Eye and Trinity College remained lit up.

Jedward
The terrible twins took on Vincent Browne on Friday night, with hilarious consequences! The lads joined Uncle Vincent on his Friday Late show, and tried to test his knowledge of pop music and the latest additions to the Oxford English Dictionary, LOL, OMG, and WAG! Reports in a Saturday newspaper indicated that the cause of John's hoarseness on the night was a voice problem, and fears (if you can call them that!) that the lads won't be able to sing in the Eurovision were raised.

I demand 75 trillion dollars!
Ever downloaded music from Limewire? Ahem, no neither have we, but the breaking news over the weekend is that the music industry want the sharing service to pay 75 trillion (yes TRILLION!) to them after losing a copyright infringement claim! To put that into context, the GDP of the entire world is around $60 trillion! The presiding judge has called the amount absurd, but the chances of the payment being over a billion at least look very high. Now delete that Destiny's Child album quick!!

Boys in green battle to beat Macedonia
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...Oh sorry, that game on Saturday night must have put us to sleep for an extended period! Trap's lads battled to a hard fought 2-1 victory over the mighty Macedonia (dodgy keeper and all!) on Saturday night at the Aviva. No Earth Hour was respected here, though I'm sure many of the 30,000 odd in attendance wished it had been!
Goals from Keane and McGeady, a late sub appearence for James McCarthy, and the row on the RTE panel afterwards were the highlights of a dour contest. By the way, is it possible that our esteemed manager could actually be getting worse at speaking English?!
In what was a quiet weekend otherwise for sport, England beat Wales 2-0 in the Millenium Stadium, while Brazil beat Scotland by the same scoreline in a game that was played in London for some reason. The big story of that game is the racism allegation emerging today.

Obama locked out!

The world's most influential man found himself locked out of his own home at the weekend, after workers didn't realise he would be returning home early after a conference! See below for the video!

Rustic Roast Lunch in Ballsbridge

One of the many perks of being part of mylunch.ie (as well as being part of the secret group that controls the world and appoints American presid..*ahem*) is that we get to try out the restaurants we feature on site quite frequently!
Now we're no Paolo Tullio, but we're the oracle on lunch, and generally we've found that we like what you like! A burrito here, a gourmet sandwich there, a few free coffees etc. It's all good in the mylunch hood!
So, when we got the offer extended to us to try out Roast in Ballsbridge during a recent exhibition in the RDS we were delira to oblige!
It was a usual Irish Spring day, blustery, showery, 10 degrees and sporadically sunny, and we were starving from a day traipising around the convention centre! A tasty filling lunch was the order of the day...
So, we decided to nip into Roast and take them up on their kind offer!

Open since late last year, Roast is the new restaurant over the well known Crowe's pub. Freshly re-decorated, Roast, like so many others, proclaims to be fresh, seasonal food done well. The difference between it and many of the others is, it delivers!
We're strong campaigners here at mylunch for the holy grail of good value + decent food, and Roast certainly performs on that front too,
Myself and my mylunch colleague were starving, and began with two seafood chowers (€6.50), which would probably be enough to fill you up on a normal day! Stuffed with chunks of seafood, it was delicious, and as a bonus it kept my colleague's mouth shut long enough for me to enyoy it. (He had been quarreling with an over zealous salesperson all morning!) A non wine drinker, I opted for a Coke, as did my partner, but we also had a look at the wine list, which comes recommended on the Roast site, and indeed from what we could make out, it was well formed.

For mains, being the old traditionalist that I am, I opted for the Beef Pie, (and it was needed to soak up what was to come downstairs later on, lets just say the phrase "pints of Guinness" and "like they were going out of fashion" were involved), which was full of mouth watering meat, lots of veg. and accompanied by a creamy mash, while Steve, the European that he is, went for the Pumpkin Risotto, with shaved parmesan and sage.

This was slightly less filling, though still tasty, but I could see him eyeing up my main with envy!
Overall, a great halftime to the day, and we didn't want to leave to go back across the road. Roast is a simple concept, akin to the cracking pub food (grub is the wrong term) you might get across the water in London,which is what we Irish are looking for in this day and age.
It does what it does very very well from our experience. We would like to have seen a bit more options on the lunch menu, but the variety is good, and we will certainly be back for a crack at dinner, and a braised lamb shank that has my name on it. (pictured)
At least we've something to look forward to the next time we're pretending to work in the RDS, plus it gave Steve the necessary chutzpah to go for round two with the salesperson in the afternoon, but that's another story...

A Catchup with Burritos and Blues

Burritos and Blues on the top of Wexford Street is now open 6 months (how time flies eh!) and is an arch commander in the Mexican Revolución which our Capital City seems to be in the throws of!

An obvious favourite of your lunch lovers, we though we'd asked Mr. David Stone, Chief Junior Vice President of Burrito Production at Burritos and Blues (aka Owner!) to have a chat, and grilled him (heh, see what we did there, GRILLED!) on how things were going, why Dubliners seem to love Mexican, his own cookery skills, and his strange love of criticism! Oh, and by the way, did you know that Burrito is translated as "Little Donkey" in Mexican? Now you do!

We asked David to give his thoughts on how things are going at the coalface of the New Mexican Wave (my God, we're on fire today!)

So, 6 months in and what do I think? I reckon Dublin LOVES Burritos (and Quesadilla, Nachos etc!)
I started planning the return of Burritos & Blues back in 2008/09. I used to joke about it and I was always laughed at! As some people already know, Burritos & Blues was operating in Ranelagh up to 2007. I was not part of it, but was lucky enough to have met the guys who were at the coal face, Fahima and the other chefs.
We opened on Wexford Street in August 2010, and I knew that we needed something different! Something Mexican, but more than just burritos! Fresh, hot, wholesome food, at a good price with top quality meats and in house made recipes. I also wanted people to see what they were getting! I also wanted the place to look casual but friendly. I realise it may look like a crèche with all the colours but I think it compliments our efforts of trying to be a young, fresh and vibrant brand.
And so it began......
We opened on the 4^th and ran out of food 2 hours in! We did not expect the crowds that came. Thankfully it opened our eyes and we haven’t ran out of food since then!

The queues running down Wexford Street to get in the door at lunch time, must mean you've come close a few times! Do you do much of the cooking yourself David?

I am not at the counters much. I love food and how it’s made, however my knife skills are not that great although I am learning! I do the day to day things like ensure the staff are happy, ensure the suppliers are giving us what we order and generally talking up the place. I am lucky that we have a great bunch of staff here. Fahima is the head chef, and I am sure you will know her if you have ever had lunch here.
The effort and passion Fahima and the guys put into the food is phenomenal! There is not a morning that I come in and Fahima isn’t complaining that something isn’t 100% right, and we have to fix it ASAP. We want our food to be known for being “Simple, Honest Food, 100% Fresh”.

What is your own favourite option on the menu?

My own fav is the Chicken Burrito with #1 salsa, as I am not a spice man myself! A little secret is to ask for some grilled veg in it as well! It’s delish! The Guac is also awesome!
We don’t just limit ourselves to Burritos. We have an extensive menu with options to suit everyone. From Nachos, to Quesadillas, and our Sexy Salsa Fries to Burrito Bowls, we try to cater for everyone. We also have several options for the Veggie’s out there.

From being a regular in store, it seems that Burritos and Blues' enthusiasm knows no bounds David! Would I be right in saying that all of this really excites you?

I love the way business works. I love the problems, the highs, the lows (the robbery, the extraction system breaking down on a Friday night etc). The model we have is quite unique in Dublin. Only ourselves and Boojum (the enemy! Only Joking!) are doing Burritos using a “Subway-esque” method and I think it works. “100% Customised, 100% Fresh”

Some of our more mature users may have fond memories of the old Burritos and Blues in Ranelagh, was it difficult to get the business going again?

Reviving Burritos & Blues was a big challenge! I am a baby faced 28 year old, and whenever I explained what I was doing, the older business people around would often sneer and immediately try to deflate me with some sort of negative statement like “The Recession” etc. In fact I think the recession has had a positive impact on us starting up! I think that people now are more savvy and do not expect to be paying top dollar for sub standard product and more importantly “scabby portions”. Our prices range from €2.50 for our cheesy cubes to 8 euro for our Big Ass Nachos. Burritos range from €5.95 for the Silver Bullet to €7 for a huge Steak Burrito.
I do believe and hope that we serve a great product, at a very good price with a substantial amount of top quality food in it, with a smile.

You guys also open late to tickle the tastebuds of the, eh, late night lunchers, shall we say!

We are open till 4 am on Friday & Saturday nights and this takes its toll on everyone, however we are slowly carving out a niche night time market on a very vibrant and loud Wexford Street!

With burritos being a relatively new thing to the generally rich tapestry of food in Dublin, you must get a lot of people asking questions about what to have?

Yes, and I love people asking questions about the food! I love people saying positive things about the place and I REALLY love the critics! People and business cannot be at their best at all times.
Criticism and feedback is key in trying to be the best at what we do! I love feedback, as long as it’s constructive! There is no place for vicious criticism in Dublin. It’s too small and vicious feedback can actually close places down! I think that review sites, and other forums like that should allow the customer actively express their views, be it positive or negative, BUT allow the business owners have an opinion and react to the feedback.
At Burritos & Blues we try to be as interactive with our customers as possible. Be it in the ordering process, where you are in constant contact with the server, or through our online and social media presence. We have a very active Twitter account (due to me being addicted to the bloody thing!), @burritosblues and a Facebook page that we are working on. Our website www.burritos.ie is quite well used, and allows customers recommend any funky Blues Music that they want to hear on the speakers in Wexford Street.
We also spread a viral video in March. You can see it on YouTube under TNT Salsa. It is just another way we try to communicate with our customers and prospective customers!
All in all it has been a great 6-7 months. The food has been flying out the door and I pray that it continues!

Sounds good! What are the plans for the future then? A full scale Burrito Revolution?

Well, in May we will hopefully start to introduce our Salsas and marinade rub into the public domain. These will be available through the Wexford Street unit and hopefully in a few stores around Dublin.
We plan on opening a smaller location on Stephen Street in April and are talking to a few guys about another possible location near Grafton Street. I don’t want to rush things however. We have to be brilliant at what we do in Wexford Street first. Viva La BURRITO!!

Be Our Guest Johnny Cool

Ah the Irish! Since the olden times, when we went around only eating spuds, wearing sheep skins and generally being converted to Christianity, we've been a nosy bunch! Theres even a rumour that hedge schools were only invented so a next door neighbour could look over the hedge!
But hey, that's no bad thing, and as you can see from our sites popularity, word of mouth is fantastic when it comes to spreading news!
Anyway, we decided that since there were loads of cool people talking on the internet about things which you lunchies would love, so why not bring them to you, ask them a bit about their lunch habits, and what they do! This will be a regular spot on The Lunchbox, and we're consistently looking for peeps to come and talk to us (we're the nosiest of them all!), so do get in touch if you want to!
For the first of these pieces, we've brought in the coolest of the cool, the man with all the insider knowledge, and the best moustache this side of Tom Selleck, Johnny Cool! If you haven't heard, Johnny is a man with his finger on the pulse, and his main objective in life is to find + recommend cool things (music, books, games, websites, presents deals etc) before anyone else. Let's let him take over, and we firstly asked him to tell us a bit about what he does...
"Well, I’m fairly new to blogging, currently concentrating on recommending cool new products, places, café’s, restaurants, websites through my Facebook and Twitter page. I'm planning to launch the blog soon, so do follow me on facebook and twitter to stay updated!"

I'm a food fan, and depending on what I'm up to, lunch can be from cooking for one at home to meeting some friends for a catchup, and a debate over what new to recommend. This changes daily.

When out I mainly go to Food Room or Bay in Clontarf and the odd trip to Espresso off Baggot St if i’m in the area. With my line of work, I also like to try somewhere new every week. If you’ve missed breakfast and need a something filling I’d recommend going to Bay and asking for a porridge, it’s the best porridge in town and it’ll get you through the afternoon, do ask nicely though!"
Johnny says he's also a mean cook, so any ladies out there, pay attention! "I love cooking, I feel I’ve taken Jamie Oliver’s 30 mins meals to the next level, 15 mins meals! You’d be amazed what can be done in 15 minutes." Having tried Jamie's meals out, we're a bit skeptical, but our momma's always told us to never doubt a man with a moustache!
He's also a fan of tech sites on the web, and of course being the first to break cool new things takes a lot of research. Johnny mentions that he spends a good bit of time checking mylunch.ie to get good value for lunch, and interestingly, he’d like to see us "grow our listings and offers even bigger, especially outside the main city centre, as there are a lot of restaurants out there with great lunch specials". Good timing Johnny, cos we're looking to do that as we speak, and we've hit him up for some recommendations, so stay tuned for those newbies on site soon!
However, it's not always coffee in town and meals out with friends for our JC, oh no! We asked him what his food vice/hangover cure was, and though he generally only drinks crystal clear mountain spring water which Nepalese goats have bathed in, he said he occasionaly likes to "devour a Marks and Sparks pepperoni pizza with a cadburys dairymilk and a cornetto", hopefully not all in the one go!
So there you have it, even the coolest of us have our off days, but hey, we forgive you Johnny!

Pancake Tuesday

What with it being Shrove Tuesday tomorrow, we thought we'd give fill you in on the best pancake related news we've heard today!

What is Shrove Tuesday?
Pancake Day (also known as Shrove Tuesday) is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent. It is traditional on this day to eat pancakes, as Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. Shrove Tuesday was traditionally the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. We eat Pancakes on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.

Free Pancakes you say?
To help get your Shrove Tuesday off to a good start, Aviva Stadium chefs will be setting up a pancake station outside the stadium on tomorrow, Tuesday, 8th March. People passing by will be treated to some delicious pancakes, cooked fresh on site and served with a choice of fillings, including chocolate, syrup, and lemon zest. The chefs will be there from 7.30-9.30am. All the Info here! Spread the word, e'ryone loves free pancakes!

Picture the scene, it's a hot Spring day, you're having a long lazy lunch in the tourist paradise that is London's Covent Garden, and suddenly, you get a craving for something sweet, yet cooling. Ah, a perfect time for an ice cream eh?

Cupcakes rampage in Cardiff
As we posted on the old Facebook, a woman with a serious sweet tooth has gone on the rampage in Cardiff, and caused around £400 worth of damage to a cupcake shop, after they sold out of her favourite. Sugarswirlz Cake Shop is relatively new to the dangerous Cardiff cupcake scene, and the woman, who was looking for a "Sweet Toothfairy Cupcake" is still on the loose, presumed armed and ravenous. Watch out Lolly and Cooks!
Now we know some of us like something sweet post lunch, but that's a bit far!

Pizza and books- A great combo?
In Madrid, a new store has opened combining the two! Called La Pizzateca, the store offers a wide range of artisanal pizzas and calzones, but is also a book store! Offers available include a slice of pizza and a book for just a fiver, a bargain for all you hungry book worms out there. I wonder do they sell cheesy novels? (Oh, that was awful!)

Oldies but goodies (Date:15 February 2011)

Spam is back! Well, the truth is, it never left, but the canned meat (just don't ask what's in it!), which has gotten a bad name from internet junk mail, is the latest retro brand to attempt to capture the nostalgia of the credit crunch, and make the big comeback into people's cupboards!

With roots in Second World War Britain (having been introduced in 1941), Spam will implement a new campaign, which will will play on its heritage and intends to strengthen its fanbase via social media. Spam already enjoys a sizable following on both Facebook and Twitter, and as well as engaging younger consumers, theyhope to reach out to the over-55s, who are now using social networks in increasing numbers. There is even an official Spam fan club!

The return of retro brands has been a very popular food trend in the last few years. Facebook groups and a huge amount of committed users, who were crazy enough to bid on a five year old bar, meant Cadbury were forced to return their Wispa Bar to it's rightful place at the top of the "Best Choc Bar to have with tea" tree!
Tayto (which of course never went away! Nyom Nyom!) brought back good old Mr Tayto, and sought to find him a partner, while Milky Way have put their "red car and the blue car have a race" ad back on TV back, while Birds Eye brought back the old Sunday afternoon favourite, the Arctic Roll!

Websites selling retro sweets have also become hugely popular, and there's even a Boards.ie forum dedicated to all things nostalgic!

So it seems Spam may be right to "bring back the Spam"!

Officially the best pizza in Ireland

Gotham Cafe, on Sth Anne St, and it's sister Gotham South in Stillorgan has been carving a huge following amongst pizza and good food lovers recently, and both have also been recognised from two very differing, but very high profile sources in the past week or two!
Due to a recent fire in a nearby premises, the South branch has been closed for the past couple of weeks, but is now ready to re-open this weekend, and we're sure that there will be customers battering down the door to get in and renew their acquaintance with a pizza or two!
Two regular customers, one of whom would be well capable of battering down any door are Brian O Driscoll and Amy Huberman! The pair love Gotham, and were spotted by the national media enjoying a Valentine's meal there on Monday! Brian may have been suffering from "Les Bleus" after a devestating loss to France on Sunday, but he made sure he was in the good books with his lovely IFTA winning wife, by treating her to a pizza at Gotham, and a shopping spree! What a man!

Gotham Café has also recently scooped the coveted Gold Medal Award for Best Pizza at the Chef Ireland 2011 event at the recent CATEX Exhibition in the RDS!! Gotham beat off stiff competition from 10 other great pizza venues, to win the title for best pizza in Ireland and will go on to represent Ireland later this year in the European Qualifier of the Global Pizza Challenge in the UK. Qualify here, and it's on to New Zealand for the world finals! The winning pizza chef from Gotham was their so called "Dough Doctor" Niall Byrne, who started with them 20 years ago and is now the General Manager of Gotham South. Now there's praise and a half!

It's been a whole day since our The Lunchbox was last updated, so we thought we'd give you a round up of what's going on in the world of mylunch since we last spoke!
Well, we've two new retailers on site in the last few days. The Dylan Hotel in Dublin 4 is situated just off Baggot St, and laden with Victorian charm! Their lunch menu looks delicious, and we've also got a new exclusive group and individual offer for The Dylan too.

Along with this, The Good Bits, on the other side of town at Store St. is a newbie!

The Catering Exhibition 2011 is currently ongoing in the RDS, and we've made a trip or two out to see the national bartending championships, and quite a few interesting food talks! It's free to get in (just register at the door), and there's lots to see. Today is the National Barista Championship finals and there's live RAI Masterchef demonstrations running throughout the day too.

On the Valentines front, Burritos and Blues have informed us that if you come in with your love companion on Monday, and buy any two burritos, you will get a Big Ass Nachos(usually €8) absolutely free!

Gourmet Burger Co. in Ranelagh also have a special for Monday 14th of 2 x Wagyu/Kobe burgers & Bottle of Rosato Spumate Ca'morlin,Italy Sparking Rose €50. The normal price is €85, and it's a great chance to sample the Wagyu so book now on 01-4977821.

And finally, we're sad to see the news of Sin É's demise. If you haven't heard, the colourful pub on Ormond Quay is closing due to rent issues. Seems to be a recurring theme in the past few months, and seriously affecting Dublin's culture and dining scene...

I demad one TRILLION DOLLARS!

Rap star, film star, clothing range owner and all round true gangsta Sean P Diddy Puff Daddy Coombs is being sued by an L.A. woman for, yep you heard right, one trillion dollars! The case, which if won, would presumeably be one of the biggest awards ever, is being brought against Combs/Diddy by Valerie Joyce Wilson Turk.
The woman accuses the rapper, his former girlfriend, and the somehow related ex police brutality victim Rodney King (whose beating sparked the L.A. Riots) of collaborating to fell the World Trade Towers on Sept 11th 2011, and also maintains the trio set her up to get disability pay.

Another accusation is that Combs/Diddy is in fact her 23 year old son's father, but the final straw is that Diddy "stole a poker chip worth 100 zillions of dollars" (a direct quote!) that she won in a Mississippi casino and later gave it away to someone else.

She is petitioning for $900 billion in child support. The other $100 billion she is seeking is for “loss of income.”
A Los Angeles judge denied her request for a restraining order against Diddy, but set a hearing for Jan 31.
Only in America eh?!

Social Network Similarities

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg showed his sense of humour on cult American T.V. show Saturday Night Live over the weekend. The geeky social network genius opened the show with a skit alongside "The Social Network" actor Jesse Eisenberg (who's depiction of Zuckerberg looks set to win him an Oscar) and the show’s resident Zuckerberg impersonator, Andy Samberg.

A triple threat of Zuckerberg on one stage soon had the audience in stitches!

"He's no Fred Perry", rugby injuries and F.A. Cup drama

In sporting news over the weekend, charismatic (*ahem*) Scottish tennis player Audy Murray's bid to become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win a tennis major again came to an abrupt end. The enigmatic and fun lovin (*ahem*) Scot was beaten in three sets (6-4 6-2 6-3) by Serb Novak Djokovic, meaning he has yet to win a set in his three Grand Slam finals so far.

In rugby, Ireland's 6 Nations squad is preparing for Italy next weekend. The squad for the game in Rome has been named, and it seems that the "Injuries" colum is mounting for Uncle Deccie.

There was little surprise in the fourth round of the F.A. Cup over the weekend, bar minnows Notts County holding might Manchester City to a draw. But the fifth round draw did throw up the massive tie of non-league Crawley Town making the visit to Old Trafford to face Man Utd!

Today is also transfer deasline day, so watch out for lots of "Sky Sports News understands" headlines, and fake "Sky Sports sources" stirring the rumour mill. Big stories include Spurs search for a striker and Fernando Torres' proposed £50 million move to Chelsea. See here for a live blog.

You may have missed something with our new site. We now provide information on the retailer pages on whether or not they say they cater for Special Diets. This includes vegan, vegetarian and coeliac options.

With first hand knowledge of the struggle many coeliacs can face when eating out, we decided that we'd try to become a much more inclusive site, (indeed one of the only food listing sites out there that is) and a better outlet for people to decide where they can and can't eat, and indeed, more importanty, where they both can and will want to eat! Choice shouldn't be hugely lessened we feel.

Now we're far from perfect yet, and we're going on what our retailers tell us about their Special Dietary options, but it's a starting point, and in the New Year, we'll be putting a big effort into really cleansing the site of coeliac options, and the inclusion of many new options. (We'd be very appreciative if you could help us with that too)

Current faves on site for coeliac options seem to be the likes of Itsa, GBK, Wagamama and Rustic Stone
Anyway, what brings us on to this is Safefood have conducted a new study which shows that "94% of restaurants on the island of Ireland are able to accommodate a request for a gluten-free meal".

Dr Gary Kearney of Safefood said of the study "“Our research has shown how vitally important it is that the manager and chef of a catering establishment are aware of the Coeliac condition and the importance of gluten-free food. This is critical given that serving staff are often heavily reliant on their advice when advising a customer. It’s clear that staff training is fundamental in addressing this ‘knowledge gap’ and, as such, all service sector staff should receive basic training on how best to address food allergies and intolerances and the importance of controlling food allergens in a catering setting.”

However, he went on to say that "while our research is welcome news for coeliacs, it is no reason to be complacent as the research revealed that serious mistakes can still be made, even when customers are presented with ‘gluten-free’ choices in ‘Coeliac friendly’ restaurants"

It's quite interesting that the number is so high. However, one would have to ask the question of whether how thoroughly these 94% are catered for, and how reliant the study is on truthfulness from owners about their own business capabilites.

Gerry Flaherty, Chairperson of the CSI added “We welcome these findings but would remind of the need for constant vigilance in the provision of safe, gluten-free food for people with coeliac condition”.
Welcome news none the less, and we at mylunch are doing our best to provide numerous wide ranging lunch options for coeliacs.

Something (healty) for the weekend seems to have taken on cult status amongst all you health mongers, recipe lovers and general foodies out there, so we're going to be continuing it for the forseeable future! If there are any recipes you'd like to see, then please get in touch through hungry@mylunch.ie!

This week, we've got an online exclusive, and a delicious easy and healthy dish to round off January, from the lovely Domini Kemp's recent cookbook.

An Itsa co-founder with her sister Peaches, (check their new offer if you want more healthy goodness!), Domini is a respected food writer and chef, and through all that, still finds time to appear each week on RTE's Four Live!

Now, you may be thinking that there's something fishy about this blog post, and there is, cos this week, we're doing super-healthy salmon and tuna fishcakes! Perfect for a main (serves two) or starter (serves four), this recipe is sure to be a hit if you're entertaining this weekend, or even if you've someone special to impress. Ah heck , who are we kidding, why not just make a batch for yourself!

Anyway, here goes, I'll let Domini take over from here!

"Don’t stress out if you cant get lime leaves or anything else off the list. Just add more of everything else. Also, if you ever do come across lime leaves, buy a bunch of them, wrap them up well in cling film and freeze them. The same goes for the lemongrass – its not idea, but it works OK as they can be hard to find when you need them.

You wil need
2 red onions, diced, 2 red chillies, deseeded and diced, 2 lime leaves, 1 stalk lemongrass, Juice of 2 limes, 1 small bunch coriander, 1 small bunch basil, a knob of ginger, peeled, 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce, 1 tsp fish sauce, a splash of sesame oil, 200g fresh salmon fillet, skin removed and roughly chopped, 200g fresh tuna fillet, skin removed and roughly chopped, a handful of sesame seeds, sweet chilli sauce to serve

How to prepare:

1. Preheat the oven to 200c. Line a baking tray with parchment paper

2. Whizz all the ingredients except the fish and sesame seeds together in a food processor until smooth. Add the fish and pulse so that it’s processed and not mushy baby food. Shape the fish into balls and place on the baking tray. If you can, chill for 10 minutes.

3. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, then bake for 10 to 12 minutes. If you can, gently turn them over halfway through so they can brown on both sides. They do cook quite quickly, and you may like to serve them a bit rare inside. Let them settle for a minute before removing from the paper (they are quite delicate, as there is no egg to bind them), then serve with sweet chilli sauce.

There's a new kid on the blog! EatMagazine, an Irish based food focused new zine has been launched, and 20,000 print copies are currently available around Dublin! The mag focuses on all things foodie, with restaurant reviews, guest columnists, recipes and lots lots more!

Eat concentrates on local restaurants, chefs, food producers and designers, a positive look at eating and dining out, and also celebrates the good things to be found in our wonderful Dublin city. Founded in response to both consumer and industry demand for a reliable local publication that focuses on the local culinary scene, readers can expect a features section that gives home to some of Irelands most passionate food and wine writers, and regular columns to keep you informed about new products, as well as info on food and drink events!

Here at mylunch, we love anything different, cool or unusual! I guess you could say we're hipster lunch lovers!

Some of you may remember the mylunch supported Tefal Greaseless Spoon project, which brought free healthy lunch, to Dublin last November, or the again mylunch supported Streetfeast project which held a flash feast in front of City Hall last Summer.

Well, flash dining is back in Dublin with a bang this February! Clonakilty Blackpudding, Ireland's famous leading pudding purveyor (which is presumeably being sent all over the world currently to homesick es-pats!) is about to launch Ireland's first ever "flash restaurant", "Clonakilty by Candlelight" in Dublin city centre from 3rd-12th Feb.

Around since 1800, the Clonakilty brand is one which is steeped in Irish heritage, (check the full story here) and now they are giving you a chance to get together with your pals for an evening of chats, delish food and something a little bit different, but intriguingly, like the Clonakilty recipe, the location is a secret!

"Clonakilty By Candlelight", will open for six special nights only, and deliver a fabulous food feast with an intimate dinner party vibe. Guests will be served culinary delights made from the full Clonakilty Blackpudding Co.’s range of delicious products, with Bridgestone recommended Ted Berner of Wildside catering in the kitchen.

Meateasy

For years, the streets of London have been home to street food traders. From Afro Carribbean chicken, to Indian spice, the old city has always had a certain flavour about her, and that has not been lost.

Dreamt up by 35 year old half Greek half Londoner Yiannis Papoutsis, "The Meatwagon" was a legendary burger van, which popped up in various locations in South East London, and is said to have warranted fabled hour long queues, impromptu street parties, and much much foodie love for it's delicious burgers. Yiannis makes regular visits to the states to bring back daring and delicious recipes.

However, all was not well in Burger Heaven. Back in early December, the legendary Meat Wagon, which had been chased far and wide by burger loving folks across the UK for so long, was stolen.

Having heard about the commotion, and the ensuing Twitter bid to find the truck, Capital Pub Group decided to give Yiannis a space above a pub on New Cross Road in the SE London area, and thus, #MEATEASY was born!

An eating experience like no other, #MEATEASY is so called "guerilla dining". It's located "out the back" of the pub, and ordering is kept at bay by providing each guest with a numbered peg that allows them, once their number is called to order 4 items from the menu – which is written in chalk on the wall! Queues are said to be 2 hours long on big nights, and Yianni and his 10-strong team work "insane 22-hour shifts" with everything cooked everything from scratch.

Menu choices for the three-month project start at £6 and include the famous juicy cheeseburger, the slightly spicier chilli cheeseburger, hot dogs and buffalo wings as well as the Dead Hippy, "basically a take on a Big Mac inspired by the Californian Double-Double (double meat/double cheese) from In-N-Out and with a slight homage to the big Mac too" and all are revered!

Cash only is taken, and no bookings are allowed, except for one table, which is reserved for #MEATEASY volunteers!

After a brief hiatus last week, your favourite smalltalk blog post of the week is back! You need not fear for small talk this week, as we've got the stories of the weekend wrapped up into a neat little package!

This week we've got blatant sexism, a destroyed country, and Trinners on the piste!

Sexy Rugby and Sexist Analysts!

The final weekend of rygby's Heineken Cup was played out over the weekend, and with most group winners already decided, it was simply a matter of who would play who in the quarter finals. With things going to plan for all three Irish provinces (including Munster who still had a Challenge Cup spot to play for), all three won with a four try bonus point, and got favourable draws for their respective quarter finals.

Ulster will now play Northampton away, Leinster will be at home in the Aviva to Leicester, and Munster will travel to France to play Brive in their Amlin Challenge Cup Quarter Final. The draw for the semis was also made, and again the draw was a good un' for the Irish provinces, who will all be at home.

Meanwhile, there was controversy in a different code over the weekend, when Sky Sports analysts Andy Gray and Richard Keys had a bit of an off air moment, while still very much on air! The two decided to slate female lineswomen, and females in general, while also making light of sexist issues in football. The full audio can be hear here, but be warned, this may not be safe for work. (unless you have headphones of course!)

A broken country?

I'm sure you're sick of it at this stage, but this weekend was a momentous one for Irish politics!At Saturday lunchtime, you had the resignation of the esteemed leader from his party leader position, but not from the country leader position.

Nominations were made puclic for the Fianna Fail leadership battle, which are set to close this afternoon, and of course amid all of this, the Green Party quietly made their way out of government, (perhaps never to be seen again?)

They probably couldn't afford cigarette papers, what's the big deal?

Finally, with the country going to hell in a handbasket, the Indo over the weekend carried the charming, if possibly fabricated story of Trinity college students causing mayhem on a French ski trip earlier this month.

According to sources from the respective colleges, students "burned and smoked €50 notes" in and outside one of the town's Alpine nightclubs to demonstrate their wealth. and "painted swastikas on to walls of the accommodation ensured the gendarmes were called".

As a former Apprentice contestant famously said, "Daddy can't buy you cop on in Trinity college", but it seems he can afford his "credit card being used to buy massive rounds of drinks".

In an unlikely twist to the story this morning, ocal cigarette paper manufacturers denied that their product was overtly expensive...

So there you have it, the three big stories making the news in your office this morning! We would advise that before you raise them, you check if the resident sexist Fianna Fail supporter and Trinity graduate is in today!

Lolly and Cooks New Salad Bar

What fantastic timing!
The gang at Lolly + Cooks have gone and made Healthy Eating Month a lot, lot easier for you lunch lovers!
Famed for their delicious cupcakes and gourmet stews, as well as a merry band of cheery staff, the stall, located at the back of George's Street Arcade, is now home to a lovely new gourmet salad bar since yesterday!

With the whole site (and the whole office!) in healthy eating mode, this is a very welcome turn of events!
The new delicious range is made fresh each day, and can be purchased as salad boxes or as part of new meal deals.

For a medium poriton (16oz) you pay only €4.50, while if you really want to catch up on your greens, go for the large, which is €6 and will really satisfy any salad lover!

Something (healthy) for the weekend

Wagamama is officially one of the mylunch offices favourite lunch treats! We make the pilgrimage to the South King St. venue at least once a week, and we’re practically known by name in there now!

Waga is also a firm favourite with singing celebs and Irish rugby players, and the main reason for this, (besides the delicious food obviously) is that it’s also a healthy option!
With a stated aim 'to combine great, fresh and nutritious food in an sleek yet simple setting with helpful, friendly service and value for money', Waga really is a great option for the savvy lunch eater, and for those of us who have pledged to eat healthily for the New Year
Now we gave away two Wagamama cookbooks on the blog just before Christmas, but if you didn’t manage to win one of those, well we’ve a treat for you, an exclusive recipe!
Chicken Ramen is a classic favourite on the menu, and personally, I would eat it for every meal if I could! So if you fancy something healthy, but very very tasty to make this weekend, then read on, because we’re about to tell you how! Plus, you could apply for a job as a Waga chef if things go well!

You will need

12 pieces menma (canned bamboo shoots), drained
2 pak choi, trimmed and roughly chopped (or 2 handfuls of baby spinach leaves)
1 litre of chicken or vegetable stock
250g (9oz) ramen noodles
Vegetable oil
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced

Instructions
Preheat the grill, and while waiting, lightly oil and season the chicken breasts. Grill these for 4 minutes on each side (or until cooked through) and allow to rest for 5 minutes.
When cooled, slice on the diagonal and set aside

Now on to the noodles! In a large pan of boiling water boil the noodles for 2-3 minutes, until just tender.
Drain, refresh under cold running water and divide between two bowls.
Next heat the chicken or vegetable stock until boiling. put the pak choi on top of the noodles and ladle in the stock.
Finally, top with the sliced chicken, menma and spring onions, and serve with a garnish of garlic!
It’s so easy, but yet so so tasty, and healthy too!

On the other hand if you want to take the lazy option, then you can drop into one of the three Wagamama venues in Dublin + Cork, and have a delicious bowl of Ramen served up to you, washed down with a vitiman packed juice!

Fair or Fowl?

There was a time when this was acceptable. When people were eating foie gras for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and nothing was thought of it when a diner dropped €1,000 on a bottle of wine.
There was a time when we expected to be paying what's now seen as stratospheric prices for a good meal, and when city centre landlords knew their tenants were raking it in, and shur, weren't all renters almost expecting their rent to go up in these times?

Those times are long gone.

With the closure of the much loved "Mermaid" restaurant on Dame Street, and the almost cult cafe "Gruel", which adjoined it (it's said their roast rolls were a thing of beauty!) came both a public outcry, but also a gushing of anger and almost resigned frustration that one has become accustomed to with modern Ireland.
You see, it has since came to light that these two premises, on the periphery of Dublin city centre's shopping district, much loved small Irish businesses, had been situated in a building whose rent was valued at €190,000 per annum.

As the Irish Times states, "The award-winning Mermaid and its more casual sister restaurant Gruel ceased trading on December 23rd, having managed to secure only a “tiny” reduction in rent from its landlady. The company behind them is now in liquidation, with the loss of 30 jobs. Mr Harrell (a former owner) said “part of the fabric of Temple Bar” was now gone."

This corner of Dublin, the axis of South George's Street and Dame Street, which should be one of the chicest jewels in the urban crown of our fair city, is now home to, by my estimation, at least 10 unmanned stores.

With economic turmoil, adverse weather, water shortages, unseasonably poor trading conditions, margin cuts and threat from large multinational chains, this is by no means an isolated incident. In fact, respected RAI chief Adrian Cummins said last year that one restaurant per day is closing in this country.
Due to high input costs, high excise costs, high wages and of course high rent, are we looking at the generification of our restaurant industry, which employs 64,000 people (1 in 4 in the tourism industry) and contributes €2 billion to the economy each year?

Granted, some might say that the industry is behind the times, and some within it running out dated Celtic Tiger business models, with old fashioned ideals, but there is no doubt that indies like Gruel and Mermaid deserve to be applauded for their attempts to be forward thinking, and be aided in this battle to keep jobs, tax revenue and above all creativity alive.

One thing's for sure, if restaurants continue to be bombarded with tax and rent hikes, that one closure per day will soon be higher, until, akin to Grafton St. and it's countless mobile phone shops and convenience stores, all that's left is the faceless big guy.

The following poignant line from the Times piece about the closure is sure to stick in the craw of many within the industry, and indeed anyone who has ever enjoyed a meal in either of the two premises in question:

"The combined rent on the two restaurants at 68 and 69 Dame Street was €190,000. When Mr Harrell and Mr Gorman opened the Mermaid, at number 69, in 1996, the rent was £15,000."

Matt wins X Factor

The 27 year old former painter and decorator was flagged as a possible winner from the start, and, much to the dismay of millions of 13 year old girls (One Direction), and presumably thousands of people with bad Liverpudlian accents (Rebecca) he was crowned winner of X Factor last night. Cardle sang "Many of Horror" by Scottish band Biffy Clyro last night, which is to be released next week, and is sure to be heading for a Christmas #1.

Paul O Connell sees red on his return to action

Channeling some of that “manic aggression” that he is so famous for right onto the cheek of Ospreys player Jonathan Thomas proved to be a futile exercise for “Paulie” yesterday, as he got himself sent off. Following a tug back from the Ospreys player, O Connell proceeded to throw his right arm back and connected with the player. He was carded to much hostility from the Thomond crowd, and is set to miss next weekend’s return game, and all the festive action too.

And so the time has come!

We’ve had begging, cajoling and even threatening. There’s been tears, drama, sob stories and tugging at heart strings, and we’ve been overloaded with emails asking for information.

But enough about the mylunch Xmas party, we've also had hundreds of entries in a bid to win a bundle of four tickets to 7UP Christmas on Ice this week!

Feck off Budget!!

Though we’re solely apolitical here in the mylunch office (yeah right!), on days like today, we like to crusade for the plight of the common lunch eater.

So to tell Cowen and Lenihan where to go, and beat the “Budget Blues” today, the ever cheery Hugo at Cafe Azteca has given us the offer of “Buy any burrito, and you can sign up for our cookery classes FOR FREE!"
The classes run weekly, and will start again in January, so why not make it your New Years resolution to learn to cook the Mexican way, and spice up your life. (I dare you to click that link!)

You can check out the happy faces from previous cookery classes on the Azteca Facebook, and take it from me, Hugo will have you cooking with a smile!

Ingredients (which Hugo purchases for you) are generally around €15, depending on what is being cooked, and you will be left with a fantastic dish, which you can be very proud of.

As you will have probably noticed by now (cos you’re here!), our shiny new site is now live. So, like proud mothers, we thought we might as well show off our new baby!

There’s a whole host of new features on the new improved mylunch, and throughout this week and next, we’ll be talking you through some of them.

Search
The main feature we’ve improved with our re-incarnation, and the first thing you will see when you hit our homepage, is our search function. You can now find what you’re looking for really easily, by searching for keyword (eg Burger for Gourmet Burger Kitchen), by County (Louth, Cork, Dublin 1 etc.), by Area (South King Street, Dublin 16 etc.) or by category. Choose as many, or as little of these options as you want, to quickly and easily find the perfect lunch, or choose your area, and then hit Random to leave your fate up to our simian controlled database!

Recommend a Retailer
Apart from the inexplicable inability of one of our team to spell recommend (*cough* Shane *cough*), the new recommend a retailer process was a no brainer for us! We strive to bring you the best lunch deals and lunch specials we can, and users telling us what they want on site makes our job a whole lot easier! But the big clincher is; if you recommend us somewhere you love to lunch, and they come on site as a result of that, we’ll give you free lunch in this premises! Tis win, win, so get recommending, because we’ve enrolled Shane in a spelling class, and might as well get our money’s worth!

Finally for this post, is our new slider. A magic flash box full of wonderful offers, comps and other juicy stuff, this can be changed with the arrows on either side, and is clickable, so if you see something you fancy, give it a click!

You may have noticed recently that the Cork area of our site is becoming increasingly populated. Well that’s because Ireland’s only lunch value site is moving to the fair rebel county! So enlighten all your fair country friends and colleagues that we are coming, and their lunchtime habits will never be the same again!

We’ve already added new exclusive vouchers for Wagamama Cork (2 for 1!) and Capt. Americas (free starter!) and there is lots more where that came from...

To celebrate our move to Cork, we’ve teamed up with Ernst and Young Cork, to help with their E+Y Charity Fashion event! On tonight (Friday 12^th), in the lovely Clarion Hotel Cork city, the event aims to raise much needed funds for Cork Simon Community and The Saoirse Foundation.

By showing that accountants aren’t all grey suits and calculators, the team hopes to help out those who are feeling even more marginalised by the current economic climate, and, as E+Y Cork managing partner John Higgins states, “We have a fantastic show lined up and will certainly dispel any myths that accountants are dull and boring!"

The fashions will be provided by local Cork retailers, and included in the models strutting their stuff will be Cork hurling star Tom Kenny and former Miss Cork Caroline Crowley, both employees of Ernst + Young. Other guests will include Irish soap stars, and perhaps even a certain few of Bill Cullen’s Apprentices will be along. Rumours that they will be hunting for an E+Y position are as yet unfounded!

We at mylunch are proud to help out with the event, and amongst other things, there will be raffle prizes from some of our new Cork retailers, as well as some of our Cork exclusive vouchers and other goodies available this evening.

A phrase we often like to use is: “There may be no such thing as free lunch, but we’ve got the next best alternative”.

However, no more shall this old chestnut be in play, because we can indeed promise you a free lunch this week!

Ah Halloween! As the old Andy Williams song goes, it’s the most spookiful time, of the year! (Ok maybe not but you get the idea!)
We here at mylunch.ie love it so much that we’ve even changed our logo this week to this little beauty!

Our retailers seem to be getting into the spirit too, and they’ve embraced this most scariest of seasons heartily.
Firstly, on Facebook today, we will be giving away a €20 lunch voucher for whoever gives us the best costume idea.

Competition is stiff, with one of the best so far being dressing up three toddlers as Tic Tacs, so beat that if you can!

It’s been very busy here at mylunch HQ here for the past week or two. As you may know, we’re looking at some exciting new projects in the near future, so apologies for the lack of posts!
So a news post is long overdue, and boy is there a lot of it!

Newbies on the site are coming thick and fast, and we’re giving you more and more options for great value lunch in Dublin!

Just Off Francis, a neighbourhood gem located, yep you’ve guessed it, just off Francis Street, is now up for those in the Dublin 8 area. With an extensive lunch, dinner and weekend brunch menu, JOF is one you should try out, and also offers a take away option if you’re looking for lunch on the run!

I walk to work (well scouring the city for the best lunch deals isn’t really work!) via Parliment Street in Temple Bar, and each and every morning I get drawn to a certain side of the road an the enticing breakfast aroma! The Larder must drag in lots of customers with it’s fantastic smells, and it’s with great pleasure that we welcome them to the site! A great-value city-centre oasis located on the street across from City Hall, The Larder serves quality homemade food to have in or take away throughout the day. Try out the Halloumi Wrap if you are looking for a delicious lunch, or sample the selection of herbal teas on offer if you want to relax and unwind.

Other new cards in the mylunch deck include the Citron Restaurant @ The Fitzwilliam Hotel. Voted the “Best Business Hotel in Dublin 2010”, and overlooking St Stephens Green, Citron is characterised by its colour palate; zesty lime and lemons off set against the chalky white terrazzo and woven white bar front, and this lends to the character of the space, which is also perfect for casual lunch in Dublin.

While if you are located in the north of our fair county, Roganstown Hotel and Country Club is perfect for a lunchtime treat in the countryside! Try their new pizza menu which has been developed with a distinct Italian flavour by Sardinian Head Chef Max Usai.

Whether you think Arthur’s Day is a cynical marketing ploy, or a great excuse to toast an Irish hero, one thing is for sure, it’s an enjoyable event, and mylunch and our retailers really got in to the spirit of things this year!

First of all we gave one lucky user five free tickets to see Fight Like Apes play a storming set in Sinnotts Bar. Big congrats to Linda Berrigan and her 4 friends who by all accounts had a great night, and even got a surprise performance from Manic Street Preachers into the bargain! (By the way, check out Sinnotts new lunch voucher, which gives you a free soft drink with your lunch main, and no you can’t exchange it for a pint of the black stuff!)

They say you can’t beat a good hearty lunch for a bit of soakage, and in memorial of Mr Guinness, many of the menus which we got in yesterday also had a twist of the black stuff! JL’s Cafe on Abbey Street had a special quick lunch of a Beef and Guinness Pie for only €6 (this lunch deal runs daily with a different dish too!), while on the other side of town, The Barge did the same.

Lagoona Bar in the IFSC kindly offered mylunch users a pint and a beef and Guinness stew for only 10 quid, (see their page for another voucher!) and Q Bar were enticing a lunch tipple with €3 pints all day!

Burritos and Blues put a Mexican twist on the old Irish drink with it’s delicious Steak and Guinness burrito for only €7, which was very tasty we can tell you, as is everything their menu! Pacinos on Suffolk Street provided the dessert for the party with specially made Guinness Ice Cream for the day, and staying on sweet things, that lovely cupcake and tasty lunch purveyor Lolly and Cooks crowned the mylunch office’s week with a special delivery of Guinness inspired cupcakes, which also flew out the door of Georges Street Arcade all day! These were so popular, and scoffed so quick that we didn’t have time to even take a picture! (See how much we really love food!)
However, we will be sure to take one the next time... (hint hint! :))

And so the big mans 251st came to pass, with rain not dampening revellers spirits, and all we can say is

Guinness and Burritos together? A match made in heaven!

Things move so fast in the lunch game that we thought we’d provide you with a summary of all the happenings on site in the last week or two!

Firstly Burritos and Blues on Camden Street has been earning rave reviews, and with the week that’s in it, they are offering a special Arthurs Day Steak & Guinness Burrito for €7, on Wednesday and Thursday only! So as if you hadn’t enough of an excuse to get Guinness into you, here’s another one!

Their special Sexy Salsa Fries (€3.50) have been kept on by popular demand too, and are very tasty indeed. Oh and if you fancy a burrito after celebrating on Thursday, there are rumours that Burritos and Blues will be open very late that night! Nature Valley Pic-a-Nic!

For the past year or so we here at mylunch have been debunking the idea that there’s no such thing as a free lunch! With lunch 2 for 1’s and comp prizes galore, that saying should be well and truly gone from your vocabulary at this stage!

The myth was once again challenged last Friday when the mylunch.ie crew were kindly invited along to the 2nd annual Nature Valley lunch picnic in Merrion Square! The overcast weather didn’t put a dampener on proceedings and a large crowd turned out to sample the joys of Dublin lunch al fresco style!

Groups of people crowded the Mount Street end of the lovely park, lazing on picnic blankets which were kindly supplied by Nature Valley, and listening to the soothing jazz sounds of a local band that played for the whole event.

All those who attended were handed a lovely bag of goodies, which included an orange, two Nature Valley bars, a sandwich and an RTE Guide to while the hour away! The lunch was greatly appreciated by all, and personally I’m currently addicted to the Oats and Honey Nature Valley bar!

The event went on until half past two, and all who attended went home, or back to work, with full bellies!

Another plus was that there wasn’t a pesky bear, who thought he was smarter than your average, in sight!

2010 is the year of the Bicentennial Celebrations in Mexico, celebrating 200 years of independence from Spanish rule, with the Bicentenario taking part in two celebrations: the Bicentennial of two hundred years since Independence (1810) and the second, no less important Centennial of 100 years since Mexican Revolution of 1910.

The uprising pitted the poor indigenous Indians and mixed mestizo groups against the priviledged classes of Spanish descent, pushing them into a violent and bloody battle for freedom from Spain, and on 16th September the entire country celebrates the day in 1810, when Mexico proved victorious with food and drink all being a big part of the celebration of course!

But if you can’t make it to Mexico City, Tijuana or Guadalajara for the celebrations, and you are looking for a Mexican flavoured lunch in Dublin, then we have a treat for you!

All next week from 13th-19th September, Hugo and the gang at Cafe Azteca on Lord Edward Street (Christchurch) have a special Mexican Food Festival ongoing!

Owned by an enthusiastic Mexican-Irish couple, the aim at Azteca is to transmit knowledge of the Mexican culinary art dating back to the Aztec empire and bring you right up to date, giving a taste of today's Mexican culture. You can be transported to Latin America for lunch if you so wish!

Certain foods are considered representative of Independence Day, and the team at Azteca has put together a special lunch menu, which will change daily for the week of 13th-19th September.
One favorite is pozole, a soup made of cacahuazintle corn, pork or chicken, while other like “chiles en nogada” and the famous “pico de gallo” have the colors of the Mexican flag; And it just wouldn't be a party without plenty of tequila!

1.6 litre diesel or 2 for 1 burger?

I was renewing my car insurance recently. Nothing odd about that, the usual ritual of spending ages trawling numerous comparison and quote sites, searching for the best quote, calling here, there and everywhere to try and bargain, and, being a young male, failing miserably in most cases!

It’s long been a part of Irish society to try and get a few bob off here and there, and this “cute hooreism” is even more important nowadays, with the dreaded r word still upon us! Anyway, between grappling with engine sizes and no claims bonuses, I spent hours upon hours researching, for a reward of €50 less than I was currently paying. A great result some might say, and I was rightly delighted!

Until, that is, I thought about the time spent and money off that I gained and compared it to something else, something many people do at least four, if not five days per week, and put a lot less though into – eating out! (Of course it would come back to food for someone so entwined in mylunch.ie , but that’s no bad thing is it?!)

Anyway, I put my thinking cap on. If I ate out only four times per week for the year, spending on average €8.50 a pop, this would come to a grand total of €1,598 (based on a 47 week working year). My car insurance, from quite a reputable Irish insurer came in at no less than 1,100 euro, down from 1,150.

Would it not make much more sense then, to spend a similar amount of man hours on my lunchtime experience?!

It’s quite easy to see how spending even 5 minutes per day on our site could save you literally hundreds of euro per year. A 2 for 1 deal here, a €2 off deal there, free dessert perhaps, or even just searching the site for daily lunch specials.

The reason we set up mylunch.ie was that we wanted to publicise the amount of great lunch deals which were available out there, and all of these small savings add up very quickly. We’re very passionate about all things lunch as you can see!

And also, isn’t it much more enjoyable browsing for lunch options than it is entering your engine size and age into an insurance site?!

Anyway, I just wanted to relate our site to something which we all have to do yearly, and which we all try to save money on.

Dun Laoghaire, Aztec Cuisine, Picnics and Fish and Chips!

First of all sorry for the lack of updates, we’ve been very busy trying to get you the best specials lunch deals, vouchers and comps that we can. As our devoted followers know, we own lunch, so come and have a look!

The upside to this is that we’ve got lots of news for you! There have been numerous new additions to mylunch.ie in recently, and we have some very exciting newbies coming online in the next while.

Out in Dun Laoghaire, the FOWC may be over for the year, but there is some good news for you seasiders! There are two new retailers on site from your neck of the woods, and by all accounts, two popular ones. The Royal Marine Hotel, which once played host to Laurel and Hardy for 33 long days and nights (especially the nights!) is now live. The historic hotel overlooking the Pier has an excellent menu, and warm atmosphere, with the Hardy’s Club Sandwich (only €10 with sides) a favourite of ours. The Royal Marine also offers a special 2 for 1 to mylunch users, so grab a friend and go for lunch by the sea.

Back up in the town, Harrys Cafe Bar is a neighbourhood fave. The funky and relaxed diner is open 7 days a week, and their lunch specials are not to be missed. Try a cheeseburger & fries for only €8.50 plus a FREE mineral/tea/coffee. Check the full menu here.

From the seaside, to Dublin’s best loved fish and chipper (see that for a smooth link eh?). Beshoffs on O Connell Street has come on board. So we all love a healthy salad for lunch, but hey, lets not kid ourselves, there’s nothing more tasty than vinegar soaked fresh cut chips and flaky battered cod. With a wide selection of fish dishes starting from €4.95 and a special mylunch offer of Smoked Cod & Chips or Sausage, Beans & Chips for only €5, Beshoffs is not to be missed.
